Buy a single pole switch if one switch controls the lights or a three way if you have two switches controlling the same lights.

For wiring in series the terminal screws are the means for passing voltage from one receptacle to another. The power source of a switch may be used for an outlet as long as you plan your wiring accordingly so you can make all these connections. Notice that these outlets have the tab removed from the hot side or brass side of the outlet which allows the top half of the plug to be controlled only from the switch. The source is at the outlet and a switch loop is added to a new switch.
